How to Spot a Fake Chloe Small Marcie Saddle Bag

Founded by French designer Gaby Agihon in 1952, Chloé was one of the first fashion houses to create ready-to-wear clothing with couture details. The house is known for its iconic handbags, which have a feminine, bohemian aesthetic. The Chloe Marcie Saddle Bag they say is “inspired by '70s folk spirit”. Basically, think Chloe, think Sienna Miller - that’s the vibe.

Keep in mind: This is a small bag and while your style will be on point, you’ll have to travel light. For example, if I carried my hairbrush in this bag the handle will and does stick out at the side. You’ll only get a fold down hair brush or tangle teezer in here.

Price

You can get this bag for an absolute steal on the resale market. The bag is currently selling in Harrods RRP £1,050.00 but you can get my exact bag for £279 on Vestiaire Collective right now!

Let’s get Authenticating

Measurements:

H17cm x W19cm x D10cm approx.

Materials: Grained Leather, Calfskin (exterior), linen (interior), polished (looks like brass) hardware | Launched In: 2009|

1. Serial Number

  • This is located inside the interior pocket on the left seam.

  • It is stamped on a leather tab.

  • The number is eight digits long and broken up by dashes.

  • It reads xx – xx – xx – xx

  • Chloe doesn’t widely publish how you decipher their date codes - but I think it is as follows:

First two digits (03): Usually a code for the style or bag line (e.g., Marcie, Paddington).

Middle pairs (14 - 60): Batch or factory codes — these aren't publicly documented by Chloé but help identify internal manufacturing details. I so wish I knew all the factories of all the designers in the world - just purely out of interest and research.

Final two digits (65): Usually represent the year of production, so 65 likely means 2015, based on Chloé's coding logic at the time. I am guessing the 6 is the month of the June.

(I clarified with Chatty G otherwise known as ‘Chat GPT’) Through extensive resale records, we know:

Bags purchased in 2014 often end in “64”

    Bags from 2015 = “65”

    Bags from 2016 = “66”

  • The tab is roughly 2cm wide and 3.6cm long

  • The corners are sharp.

2. Hologram Sticker on Leather Tab

Chloe has tried to implement measures to protect the brand from counterfeiters. In addition to the serial number, they have placed a hologram sticker on the reverse side of the leather tab. This is a mirrored sticker with Chloe highlighted in a smaller dark grey box ,and a unique code, in a medium grey box underneath it.

When held and moved in the light – you see rainbow colours (hologram style).

This code will match with an identical sticker, stuck on the authenticity card that comes with your bag.

It is not totally uncommon for these stickers to come off (but majority should still have them). My Chloe Drew sticker came off as I was inspecting it to write a blog post.

3. Authenticity Cards

Again, people do lose these! But incredibly helpful if you have them.

-The authenticity card is white

-It has Chloe on the front with CARTE D’AUTHENTICITE in thin black lettering underneath.

-On the back of the card. It features two text boxes, one for the sales assistant to write in the DATE of purchase and POINT OF SALE. Run your finger across these slowly – the text boxes are matte and you can feel the difference in texture under your finger company to the shiny credit like texture of the rest of the card.

The sticker is 1.2cm wide and 0.7cm high.

It comes in a little white envelope measuring 7cm x 8.5cm. Chloe is embossed and raised to touch on the front in the brands signature light pink font.

4. Interior Bag Pocket

The interior pocket is made of the same leather as the handbag with the same finish. It does not have a zip.

The interior pocket is 10.5cm (w) by 6cm (h)

The bottom corners of the pocket are curved.

The pocket edges are all finished – not left raw.

It outlined in the same light pink stitch as the exterior of the bag.

It has two small triangles stitched into the top corners. [2 stiches along the top, 3 stitches down and 4 stiches for the longest side of the triangle]

 5. Chloe Stamps

There are two Chloe stamps on the Small Marcie Saddle Bag.

The first is embossed on the interior pocket.

It is centred at the top of the pocket. It is located 5mm down from the edge of the leather.

The Chloe letters are positioned 1mm apart.

The C stamp should be thicker where the letter curves in the middle and thinner at the ends.

The C, H and L are all serif font – meaning they have little feet.

6.Made In Spain

Chloe Small Marcie Saddle bags are Made in Spain.

Chloe Drew bags are Made in Italy.

Pay close attention to the ‘MADE IN SPAIN’ if it is crooked or looks wonky then its fake.

The lettering is very fine.

Positioned on the right hand side, 1cm in from the edge of the pocket, 5mm from the top line of stitching and 4mm from the bottom.

6.Stitching

The stitching matches the colour of the bag to perfection. It’s light pink but frames the bag perfectly.

Look out for uniformity - no wonky stitches here!

7.Hardware

One of the biggest giveaways if you are being duped on a Chloe Marcie is the hardware. In my opinion the counterfeit hardware is either too shiny, flimsy, or too dull - not the polished brass look as per the real deal below.

The Chloe is crisply engraved, not smudgy

Real Screws

Real Screws - not mock heads

I hope this has helped you xx
