Review: London's MOST Popular Bag! Is It Really Worth the Hype?

If you want to know how to authenticate a Longchamp Le Pilage click here.

If you've strolled through the streets of London recently, chances are you've spotted a Longchamp Le Pliage bag or FIFTY. This simple yet iconic bag seems to be everywhere – from school girls, the morning commuters to women in the chic cafés in Notting Hill. It’s as if the Le Pliage has become the unofficial bag of the city. But what makes it so popular, and more importantly, is it really worth all the hype?

As someone who's witnessed my fair share of ‘it bag’ trends come and go, I tend to be a bit skeptical when something reaches this level of popularity (Jacquemus Chiquito ahem, no thank you). But after seeing some iconic street style, chic commuters and influencers wear it with effortless style, I wanted to see for myself what the fuss was about.

First Impressions

The Le Pliage doesn’t scream luxury, that’s because it’s not and was never designed to be. It's a nylon tote with leather handles – simple, practical, almost understated compared to the flashier designer bags out there. But maybe that's part of its charm? There's something timeless about its minimal design. It fits into any outfit without demanding attention, and that’s something I can appreciate. Its very chic and very French.

Then there's the foldability factor. It folds neatly into a small square, perfect for travel or just keeping in your bag for those spontaneous shopping trips (you know the ones). It’s lightweight, durable and water-resistant – all things that make it perfect for the unpredictable London weather. But, I think the foldability is a gimmick to present the bags in store. Personally my Le Pilage is used as a shopping bag, gym bag or laptop bag - I don’t take it with me to the shops folded down - I don’t think anyone does.

Putting It to the Test

After picking up my own Le Pliage, I decided to take it for a spin. From the morning commute + Central + Victoria line, to a full day of meetings and running errands, I put this bag through its paces. I threw in my laptop, a notebook, a water bottle, make-up, gym kit (minus trainers) and a bunch of other essentials. Surprisingly, it held up well. The straps didn’t dig into my shoulders like I feared they might, and it didn’t lose its shape even after being stuffed to the brim.

It’s surprisingly roomy, too. I’m not saying it’s a Mary Poppins bag, but it’s close. Everything I needed for the day fit inside without a problem, and there was even a small inner pocket for my keys and phone. No more frantic searches at the bottom of the bag – a small victory, but one I really appreciate.

Why Is It So Popular?

I think a big part of the Le Pliage’s appeal is its versatility and price point - its accessible but has a touch of elevation. Whether you're dressed up or down, this bag just works. It’s not trying too hard, and maybe that’s why it’s become such a staple. It's functional but chic in a way that feels effortless – something that Londoners, known for their understated style, seem to love.

The price point is another draw. While it's not cheap, it's much more accessible than many (nearly all) high-end designer bags. It’s £120 and you're getting quality craftsmanship without the hefty price tag, and it’s a bag that you can genuinely use every day without worrying about wear and tear.

The Downsides?

While the Le Pliage has a lot going for it, it's not without its downsides. The nylon material, while durable, doesn’t offer much structure. For example, if my bag isn’t that full and I put my laptop in standing upright - it slips down to lying flat - which means I hit a lot of people walking past me when I speed walk to the office. If you’re someone who prefers a more structured, polished look, this might not be the bag for you.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, because it’s so popular, you’re bound to see others carrying the same bag. If exclusivity is important to you, this is not the best choice. But if you're okay with joining the ranks of Le Pliage lovers, then it’s a non-issue.

I would not recommend buying a lighter coloured bag - the beige, gets dirty and looks tired quickly - in fact all the lighter colours do. Buy it in Navy or Black.

So, Is It Worth the Hype?

After a few weeks of carrying my Longchamp Le Pliage, I can confidently say: yes, it is worth the hype – but with a few caveats. It’s not a bag that’s going to turn heads or make a bold fashion statement, but that’s not the point. It’s a practical, versatile, and a stylish option for everyday use.

In a city like London, where functionality is just as important as fashion, the Le Pliage hits all the right notes. It’s become a staple for a reason, and while it might not be the most glamorous bag in my collection, it’s definitely one of the most useful. Whether you’re commuting, traveling, or just running errands, the Le Pliage has your back (literally).

So, if you’re on the fence about joining the Longchamp club, I say go for it. After all, there’s a reason this bag has stood the test of time – and I’m now officially a fan.
