When Jonathan Anderson introduced the Loewe Puzzle bag in 2014, it wasn’t just a handbag, it was a revolution. Its geometric design and unique construction became an instant classic, ja’dored by fashion lovers worldwide. But here’s a secret: if you’re considering investing in a Loewe Puzzle bag, it might actually be better to buy preloved. Why? Because the original Puzzle bags were actually made to a higher standard of craftsmanship and quality than the newer models. Let me talk you through it…

The OG Puzzle Bag I was trying to buy on Vestiaire Collective.

The OG Puzzle

The Original Puzzle Bag: A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

The original Loewe Puzzle bag was literally a marvel of artisanal design. Constructed from 75 individual pieces of leather, it showcased the brand’s dedication to detail and quality. Each piece was carefully stitched together to create its iconic geometric structure, a process that celebrated Loewe’s rich heritage in leatherworking.

This wasn’t just a bag; it was a work of art. The overlapping design and intricate assembly gave it a sense of luxury and durability that justified its premium price. (as much as we can justify these prices!!)

But then…. the Puzzle Edge came and a shift in production.

Loewe introduced the Puzzle Edge, (Loewe have since dropped the ‘Edge’ and it is back to just being named ‘Puzzle’.) a newer, updated version of the bag. While still visually stunning (again if you gift me this I am not saying no!), the Puzzle Edge represents a shift in how the bag is made:

  • Fewer Pieces: The Puzzle Edge is made from just 44 pieces of leather, a significant reduction from the original 75.

  • Simplified Construction: Instead of all the individual pieces all being stitched together, the Puzzle Edge features overlapping leather, which is less intricate and less labor-intensive.

  • Less Material: With fewer pieces and less material used for the main body, the Puzzle Edge is faster and cheaper to produce.

Let’s be real - in my opinion this was a cost cutting exercise: the craftsmanship and luxury feel of the original Puzzle bag has been compromised. So now… unfortunately we are being charged the same money (actually more money than ever before!) for a lesser product.

The New Puzzle 2025

Why Preloved Puzzle Bags Are Superior

  1. Better Quality
The original Puzzle bags were made with an incredible level of detail and care. Each piece of leather contributed to its structure and durability, making it feel more luxurious and substantial than the newer versions.

  2. More Value for Money
Buying preloved means we get some serious discount - On Vestiaire Collective discounts range from 25% up to as much as 44%

  3. A Piece of History
The original Puzzle bag isn’t just a handbag—it’s a representation of Loewe’s artisanal legacy. Owning one means you have a piece of fashion history (to quote Stanley Tucci “It’s a shining beacon of hope”, something that today’s more mass-produced versions can’t quite replicate.

The Takeaway: Old Is Gold…

If you’re considering a Loewe Puzzle bag, take a moment to think about what you’re buying. The newer models may be quicker to produce (but we don’t care about that! -does production efficiency affect you - NO!) , but they lack the craftsmanship, character, and charm of the originals. A preloved Puzzle bag offers superior quality, better value (SAVE literally hundreds possibly thousands), and a deeper connection to the artistry that made the bag an icon in the first place.

What do you think? Are you team original puzzle, or do you prefer the sleekness of the new Puzzle Edge? Let me know.
