Review: YSL Kate Tassel Velvet Bag -The Perfect Evening Companion
Let me introduce you to one of my all-time favourite evening bags: the YSL Kate Tassel Velvet Bag. This bag is truly a gem, and even 8 years after purchasing it, I can confidently say it holds its place as a timeless classic.
The Details:
This bag made its debut in 2010 and is named after the iconic Kate Moss. Designed as the perfect evening bag, it’s available in two styles: one with a tassel and one without. It also comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large, and a variety of materials including leather, satin, suede, and sequins (Kate 99). Unfortunately, the velvet version, which is what I own, is now discontinued, but it remains one of the prettiest and most versatile options Saint Laurent has ever produced. I do not know what it is but I dislike the leather Kate, I think it looks cheaper, flimsy and less luxurious - whereas the velvet looks expensive - it reflects the light, and sets off the hardware.
I do not feel this about all YSL Leather Bags - the Sunset is 10/10.

My YSL Kate Tassel Velvet Bag:
I purchased mine circa 2017 from Hardly Ever Worn It, and it’s been a staple in my wardrobe ever since. Despite its luxurious velvet material, it’s insanely durable—a pleasant surprise considering velvet can often be hit or miss. This bag fits a lot more than you’d expect for its size, making it practical as well as classic and stylish.
What Does it Fit?
Pros:
Durability: The velvet is surprisingly hard-wearing, which means I don’t have to treat it like a small child.
Capacity: For a small bag, it fits everything I need for an evening out—phone, lipstick, keys, cardholder, tangle teezer!
Timeless Design: It’s elegant, glamourous and classic, the kind of bag that won’t go out of style, no matter how trends evolve.
The Chain: This chain is very heavy and feels expensive - which I like - one of the best quality chains out there.
It can be worn crossbody, shoulder, or hold it as a clutch (just tuck the chain inside)
The (Slight) Con:If I’m being nitpicky, the tassel can feel a little overdone at times. It’s undeniably eye-catching, but depending on the outfit, it can come across as a bit extra. However, it’s a minor detail in an otherwise perfect design.
The Discontinued Velvet Edition:
While the suede Kate 99 is still available, it’s just not the same bag. The proportions are different, it’s longer, and in my opinion, it lacks the charm of the original velvet Kate Tassel Bag. If you’re lucky enough to find the velvet version on a resale site in good condition, grab it. It’s a true collector’s piece - I think!
Counterfeit Warning:
When purchasing a pre-loved Kate Tassel Bag, be extra vigilant about authenticity. The classic YSL designs are heavily counterfeited, and fakes have gotten increasingly convincing. To spot a fake, read my other post here you need to look closely at the tiny details—the stitching, the logo alignment, the font, and the overall finishing. If something feels off, trust your gut, do not buy it.
Final Verdict:
This bag is the perfect evening bag, and I genuinely love it. It’s timeless, practical, and elegant.
Rating:
9.5/10 – The tassel is a bit overdone, but otherwise, it’s perfection.
If you’re considering a YSL evening bag, the Kate Tassel Velvet Bag is worth hunting down. It’s a rare beauty that will elevate any look and hold its own in your collection for years to come.
